Florabella Gardens

Earlysville, VA
Florabella Gardens is a sustainable cut flower farm in Central Virginia founded by Katharine Hannigan. Katharine in her own words: "Transplanted to Virginia in 1986, I was rooted in Latin America. I’ve been trying to evoke the senses of my childhood years in Bogota, São Paulo, Mexico City, and Caracas ever since. Through a child’s eye, each week seemed like a celebration - of life, death, beauty, family, history, and the everyday. And, as a child, I didn’t appreciate how magical it was. Years later, I’d find myself poaching chicken, simmering beans and wrapping endless tamales at Two Moons Kitchen in Charlottesville - an homage to my mother and all she taught me. For the next twenty years, with the noise and speed of the kitchen behind me, I built and tended gardens throughout Albemarle County and beyond, always ending the day in my own. And somewhere along the way, I fell in love with the feel of clay. Life is quieter now, and the memories and eyesight blurrier. But my hands, immersed in soil, clay or masa, continue working to create and share what I once took for granted. Here, at the feet of the Blue Ridge, and now, propelled by hope and renewal, Florabella Gardens intends to flourish, spreading the beauty and joy of flowers for occasions large or small."
