Blossom Hill Farm

I have become enchanted with the green developing flowers of the well known native Golden rod! I love the chartreuse color, the texture of the maturing new flower buds and its slightly earthy scent. It will make a wonderful filler with all the benefits it has to offer, long,strong sturdy stems, multiple flowers on a single stem, and its beautiful color! For those that dislike the deep gold color of the matured flower, this might be an opportunity to use our native gem!

This Spike type of Amaranthus is a Landrace variety grown by my farm. Very large, wine red spikes adorn the tops of these 5-6’ tall plants. (The photo color is lighter than the actual color) These are the first cut and the large, average 12” x 3” flowers on 28-36” stems are only available now! They offer striking texture, color, size and movement to accentuate or be the focal point of large pieces. Smaller, but still striking flowers from these plants will be available in the next few weeks.

Rosanne Black is another intriguing color from the Rosanne series. A deep plum to purple, or black raspberry with copper edges that ripple in a tight cup. This is a rather contemporary color that all designers with a modern flair would appreciate. Their emerging flower buds are extraordinary! A great accent piece that works well with a range of colors, such as orange, blues, pink, cream, chartreuse and silver gray.

This week’s “Bargain Bucket” consist of: imperfect lisianthus “Misty Pink and “Roseanne Black” Mountain Mint, Sage(2 types) perennial greens All flowers and greens are imperfect, either bent or contorted stems, short stems, the last cutting of a bed, etc. None of them are diseased or bug infested. These buckets cater to creative price conscious designers. These are grower’s choice! Buckets contain anywhere from 40-60 stems. Price is reduced for imperfections!

This Mountain Mint is the original version of the plant, it does not have the large flower heads of the newer variety. It still offers versatility as a filler flower. It’s full of texture, scent and a lovely sage color. Its citrusy minty scent is sweet but not overpowering. Their small tiered flowers have a lavender cast to them add neutral color and texture. Their sage like color is a great foil to any arrangement. Quantities are limited due to its first year.

“Strawberry” hydrangea has panicles of creamy white with strawberry pink accents. This year’s flowers average 6-8” long. Weather conditions have not been perfect and they do have a very small amount of browning to some petals. Despite that that are still attractive. They also are at the right stage to dry and will work well for that.

This variation of Dusty Miller is stunning! A deep sage green on the interior of the leaf and a silver gray/green on the outside. A perfect compliment to any color wave it also offers outstanding texture. Deeply lobed leaves and a soft texture that you want to touch, all work together to create a perfect filler for both pastel and gem tone colors. Late summer and fall are when these shine!

Misty Pink is pastel/blush in the field, but will darken slightly in the cooler. As with all Lisianthus, it is a gorgeous rose-like flower in shape and size, minus the thorns! Easy to work with and long lasting you can’t go wrong with these beauties!

Garden variety Asparagus is a wonderful addition to your greens collections. They can be quite tall and range from 30” upwards. Some are the females and come with green berries or small flowers to add more interest. They keep well in a cooler and are easy to work with. You can use the piece whole of snip off the small side fronds for use.

The beetles and caterpillars are waning, so I’m able to offer both wild raspberry and blackberry canes again! The foliage on both is lovely, with a bit of red highlights, stems are green, or in the case of the blackberries they have a bit of mahogany highlights. Prickers/ spines are softer than the older ones, but still warrants gloves.
